TOWSON UNIVERSITY

This institution was known then as “Maryland State Normal School”, as time passed the school outgrew its facilities located in Paca St. and moved to Towson eventually they changed the name of the school from Towson State College, in 1976, the school’s named changed again to Towson State University. Another named changed took effect on July 1, 1997 to Towson University.

Towson University offers the most comprehensive sports program in the metropolitan Baltimore area, Towson has one of the best mascots in the country. The name of the sports team at Towson were known as the “Towson College Knights”.
The first appearance of the tiger on campus wasn’t until 1963, about a year later they officially made the tiger as their mascot. In 2003 the tiger was renamed “DOC” in honor of Donald Minnegan, a longtime Towson faculty member.

The first statue tiger of TU was made from fiberglass, it was purchased to create more positive campus atmosphere. Due to vandalism the statue was taken down.

In 2006, the TU decided to put up again a new tiger statue this time it is made from bronze. The new tiger Bronze Sculpture has three more duplicates where they were placed in front of library, new entrance of university and near the entrance of SECU Arena.

The Bronze Sculpture of DOC is the coolest tiger mascot, the details are précised the claws marks are extending from the back end of the tiger, just look at his eyes and teeth and he could rip you into pieces.
